Profile

Joachim Stanisław Brudziński is a Polish conservative politician. He was first elected to the Sejm in 2005. Brudziński graduated from the Political Sciences Department of the University of Szczecin and finished his MA studies in pedagogy. He is currently the president of the executive committee (earlier secretary-general) of PiS. In 2018, Brudziński joined the Polish cabinet as the Minister of Interior after Mariusz Błaszczak, his predecessor, became the Minister of National Defense.

In October 2019 during the EP debate on the situation in Ukraine, Brudziński expressed hope that Russia will endorse the “Steinmeier formula” and called for “respecting” international law in the conflict areas. In August and September 2019, Brudziński got involved in the public debate on historical revisionism and the collective memory of WWII, both in the Polish public domain and in the EP. In an interview for Polskie Radio 24 – Trójka, Brudziński claimed that “today, the Russian attempts of historical relativism are getting stronger.” Brudziński’s position in these is re-legitimizing the "two-totalitarianism" narrative, stressing that the start of the war was provoked by the union of the two unprecedented evil powers – Nazi Germany and the Soviet communism. In the EP debate on European memory on 18 September 2019, Brudziński restated this argument and criticized Russian politicians who are attempting to “relativize history.”

As a member of the Delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee, Brudziński regularly contributes to the debates on the war in Syria, calling for a consideration of the “wider perspective of the EU-Turkish relations” and a “quest for mechanisms stabilizing the region”.

Joachim Brudziński raised the issue of aid for refugees in the debates in January in the European Parliament and emphasized that Poland is the leader in helping refugees "on the spot", which would suggest that Poland helps the most, for example in Syria. As MEP Janina Ochojska later pointed out it was not true.

In 2020, Joachim Brudziński became famous for his polemic with the US ambassador in Poland, Georgette Mosbaher, stating that the letter initiated by the US embassy on the defense of LGBT people in Poland was interference in Poland's internal affairs. Joachim Brudziński then asked why the US and diplomats do not care to the same extent about the rights of Christians and pro-life activists discriminated against all over the world.
