Budapest Forum – Budapest, Hungary, 21-22 September 2022

Following last year's inaugural event, leading experts, activists, decision-makers and journalists will return to Budapest, Hungary, on 21-22 September 2022 to discuss the most pressing issues currently facing citizens of democratic and nominally democratic countries. The two-day Budapest Forum, organized by the Municipality of Budapest, Political Capital and the CEU Democracy Institute, will explore and examine policy proposals under the banner of ‘Building Sustainable Democracies’.

The aim of this two-day event, which will comprise contributions from almost 100 local and international experts, is to identify impactful policy solutions to the challenges facing democracies across the globe. The conference will also seek to elevate the city of Budapest and put the Hungarian capital back on the progressive intellectual map.

The Budapest Forum will investigate an array of subjects, including the effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine; the current energy crisis and its impacts on the international community; the challenges for democracies in an age of populism; fake news, state-funded disinformation campaigns, and how this can be countered; and regional challenges and possibilities with respect to climate change.

Confirmed attendees at this year’s Budapest Forum include Nikola Dimitrov, former Deputy Prime Minister of North Macedonia; Jamie Fly, President of Radio Free Europe in Washington; Sergey Guriev economist, provost of Science Po and former advisor to the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev; Nina Hachigian, Deputy Mayor for International Affairs of the City of Los Angeles; Ivan Krastev political scientist, Chair of the Centre for Liberal Strategies and permanent fellow of the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna; Borislav Sandov, Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria; Radosław Sikorski, Member of the European Parliament; and Rafał Trzaskowski, Mayor of Warsaw.

The conference will be opened by Gergely Karácsony, Mayor of Budapest.
